I've always been a thinker. It must be the Libra in me... ever weighing the left with the right, the right with the wrong, the wrong with the just. In my quest to do what I love and to find meaning in life beyond procreation (which is certainly a wonderful thing, and the meaning of life for many, but not everything for me), I have come across some amazing thinkers who have inspired and motivated me and who I'd love to have dinner with.
>> SIMON SINEK - 'Start with Why'
I came across this video by accident a few years ago. I was trying to find a reference for a marketing tool but, down a dark Google hole, I found this gem instead. It has inspired me in so many ways and was pivotal in helping guide my own search to define my 'why' and ultimately the steps towards the creation of Moteef.
>> ERNEST SIROLLI - 'Want to help someone? Shut up and listen!'
I'm a bit of a 'fixer' by nature - ever ready to leap in and suggest to someone how to fix their problem, but this talk shed light on that impulse and I've not forgotten the lesson. I had the good fortune of hearing and seeing Mr Sirolli deliver this talk last year when TEDx came to Perth. His is a powerful message that is on a grand scale but it can be applied to our everyday and it is an idea worth spreading.
>> BRENE BROWN - 'The power of vulnerability'
I describe what I do as "the design of original textiles to encourage connection and a desire to linger longer". I believe that connection happens when we share our lives, experiences, knowledge, food and spaces openly and honestly. Through defining my 'why' I have been able to create a mantra that underpins what I do in my business and in my life - Go bold. Be real. Stay curious. Simply put, it comes down to having courage, being authentic and staying open to new ideas. Brené's research completely validates that, at the tender age of 44, I might just be on to something!
